A Lifetime of Love: Remembering Lola and the Lessons She Left Behind
A few months ago, I said goodbye to my beloved Lola after 19 unforgettable years together. She was more than a pet; she was my companion, my confidant, and my source of endless joy. Saying goodbye was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, but reflecting on our journey together has reminded me of the profound bond we shared—and the lessons she taught me along the way.
The Day Lola Came Into My Life
Lola came into my life as an eight-week-old bundle of energy, weighing just 2.5 pounds. I’ll never forget the moment I placed her on my kitchen counter, and she climbed into the little plastic tray of my kitchen scale. She settled in, her tiny body curling up in the tray, and fell asleep within 10 seconds.
It was a moment that perfectly captured who Lola was: fearless, adaptable, and unapologetically herself.
Our first meeting happened at San Diego airport. I was waiting eagerly when she was brought out in a crate meant for a full-size German Shepherd. I remember thinking, How tiny is this puppy if this crate is for her?
I opened the door, expecting her to run to me, but she stayed put. Crawling into the crate to meet her, I was greeted with a furiously wagging behind and a pair of bright, curious eyes. She locked her gaze with mine, as if to say, I’m here, Momma. Let’s DO THIS!
From that moment, Lola met the world on her terms—bold, independent, and always ready for the next adventure.
Navigating Life’s Highs and Lows Together
Over the next 19 years, Lola was by my side through every chapter of life. She was there for the triumphs, the heartbreaks, and everything in between.
She had a way of sensing when I needed her most, curling up next to me on tough days or nudging me out of my comfort zone with her boundless energy.
Every pet owner knows this bond—the unspoken understanding between you and your furry companion. With Lola, it was more than companionship; it was a partnership. She was my constant, my anchor.
Lola’s Golden Years
As she grew older, Lola faced challenges with the same bravery and spirit that defined her life.
She lost her hearing, battled dementia, and adjusted to wearing doggy diapers. Her once sprightly frame, which had peaked at 13 pounds, dwindled to just over 6 pounds. Yet, even as her body grew frail, her spirit remained as vibrant as ever.
On her last birthday with me, I dressed her in a spangled tutu—an outfit she graciously tolerated for my sake. True to form, she dove into her cupcake with gusto, nearly setting her nose alight on the sparkler in her excitement.
That day, like so many others, was a testament to Lola’s unwavering zest for life. She found joy in the simplest moments, teaching me to do the same.
The Lessons Lola Taught Me
Lola wasn’t just a dog—she was a teacher in her own unique way. Over the years, she imparted lessons that will stay with me forever.
1. Find Joy in the Small Things
Whether it was chasing a ball, lounging in a sunny spot, or savoring a treat, Lola found happiness in the simplest of pleasures. She taught me to slow down, appreciate the moment, and find joy in the everyday.
2. Be Fearless
From the moment I met her, Lola approached life with fearlessness. She didn’t hesitate to explore new places, meet new people, or take on challenges. Her courage inspired me to face my own fears with confidence.
3. Be Present
Lola had an incredible ability to live in the now. She didn’t dwell on the past or worry about the future. She was fully present, reminding me to do the same—especially during life’s most challenging moments.
4. Love Unconditionally
Through every high and low, Lola’s love was constant. She didn’t care about my flaws or mistakes; she loved me for who I was. That unconditional love was a gift, and it’s a reminder of the power of loving wholeheartedly.
5. Embrace Life’s Treats
Whether it was a cupcake, a cuddle, or a walk in the park, Lola embraced life’s treats with enthusiasm. She taught me to celebrate life’s small victories and savor its sweetest moments.
The Gift of a Lifetime
Nineteen years with Lola was the gift of a lifetime.
Her passing has left a hole in my heart, but it’s also filled with gratitude for the time we had together. She was more than a pet; she was a reminder of life’s beauty, resilience, and joy.
Saying goodbye was painful, but I find comfort in knowing that she lived a full, happy life—and that she’ll always be with me in spirit.
Run Free, My Sweet Girl
Lola’s legacy is one of love, courage, and joy.
As I reflect on our years together, I’m reminded of the simple yet profound truths she embodied: to find joy in the small things, to live fearlessly, and to cherish every moment.
To my sweet girl, my partner through life’s adventures: run free. You’ll always be with me, in my heart and in the countless memories we made together.
Thank you, Lola, for 19 years of unconditional love, laughter, and lessons. You were the best gift I could have ever asked for.
